It Doesn’t Have to Be Awkward
by: Shannon McNay
Remember that email you meant to send? It was only supposed to be a simple, “Hey, let’s catch up soon!” But every time you sat down to write the email, something else would come up. So you’d put it off for a day, then another few days, then a few weeks, then suddenly…
…a whole year went by.
It’s way too late to send that email now, right?
It’s never too late to send a catch-up or getting-in-touch email.
Sure, it can feel awkward to say, “Hey, we met a year ago and I meant to email you then but I never got around to it. That’s why I’m doing it now…” But you don’t have to phrase it like that. Instead you could say, “Hello! I’ve been meaning to get in touch with you for quite some time. I know it’s been awhile since we’ve last met, but I’d love to hear how you’re doing! Let me know if you’d like to grab a coffee sometime in the next few weeks.”
See? Not awkward. Just owning up to it (yes, it’s been a long time) but expressing an authentic interest (I’d really love to hear what’s new in your life!). It’s only awkward if you make it awkward.
It bears repeating: It’s only awkward if you make it awkward.
It’s never too late to get in touch. It’s never too late to meet up with a contact. It’s never too late to open yourself up to opportunities.
